The Gallos by C.J. Simone follows seventeen-year-old photographer Sylvia Brooks, an isolated outcast in Lake Manna, Virginia, already marked by her father’s violent past. When her grandmother falls ill, Sylvia accepts a place in the Gallo family’s ivy-covered mansion so she can finish her senior year. That uneasy refuge collapses after two people close to the family vanish and Sylvia wakes with a head injury and a gap in her memory. Suspicion closes in fast. As she tries to reconstruct those missing hours, the novel becomes a taut study of inherited stigma, small-town panic, and the terror of not knowing whether you are the victim or the threat.
What look like flaws at first are deliberate stylistic choices, and they give the book its force. Sylvia’s looping thoughts about “crazy genes” do not stall the plot; they trap the reader inside the same mental spiral as a traumatized teenager who cannot trust her own mind. Supporting characters escalate with similar volatility—earnest concern curdling into hostility—which tracks how quickly a tight community can turn on someone already marked as “the other.”
Simone writes in a direct, accessible first-person point of view that slips easily between Sylvia’s present-tense dread and fragmentary memories that keep the pressure high. Short chapters and sharp chapter breaks make the book hard to put down. The originality sits in how trauma-induced memory loss is used: instead of a standard unreliable-narrator trick, the amnesia forces both Sylvia and the reader to interrogate her innocence in real time. Themes of generational trauma and the dread of inheriting violence stay present without lecturing.
Polished prose, tight control of pace, and a final turn that lingers make The Gallos: The Right Girl to Frame a strong, confident thriller. An unreserved 5 stars.
